Neurosurgeons of the National Neurosurgery Center together with obstetricians and gynecologists of the UMC Center for Motherhood and Childhood performed two successful operations at once: removal of a giant brain tumor and delivery by cesarean section to a woman at 38 weeks of pregnancy.

In July of this year, a native of the Akmola region sought medical help from doctors at her place of residence with complaints of deteriorating vision, clouding and discomfort in the right eye, weakness and fatigue. Doctors recommended an MRI of the brain. On MRI, doctors detected a brain tumor in the chiasmatic-sellar region with spread to the frontal lobes measuring 5 * 5 * 6 cm.

During an urgent consultation of doctors of JSC "NCN" headed by the chief neurosurgeon of the country, professor, academician of the NAS RK Serik Kuandykovich Akshulakov, a decision was made on her urgent hospitalization for surgical treatment at the Neurosurgery Center.

Given the serious condition of the patient and the high risk of further complications, neurosurgeons, obstetricians-gynecologists, anesthesiologists collectively determined the treatment tactics for this patient. So, first, it was decided to perform a cesarean section, and then perform an operation to remove the giant tumor. A girl was born without technical complications. Microsurgical operation to remove the tumor using a neuronavigation system lasted about 8 hours and was successful. The delicate work of the complex operation was that the tumor was located close to the optic nerve and carotid artery, in such cases it is very important not to damage parts of the nervous system and its pathways.

Today, the mother and baby feel good. The patient's vision began to recover after the operation. The woman is under the supervision of the Center's neurosurgeons, and the baby was transferred to the UMC Maternity and Childhood Center.

The operation was performed by the head of the department of neurosurgery of brain pathology, candidate of medical sciences - Nurzhan Ryskel'diev, neurosurgeons Muratbek Tleubergenov and Dauren Baimukhanov. Also during the operation, a multidisciplinary team of doctors worked, including the most experienced anesthesiologists of the NCN and obstetricians-gynecologists of the UMC Maternity and Childhood Center.
