Neurosurgeons of the pediatric neurosurgery department performed a complex operation on a 5-month-old baby to remove a tumor of the left lateral ventricle of the brain, which provoked a violation of the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid and the development of internal hydrocephalus - excessive accumulation of fluid in the ventricles of the brain, an increase in intracranial hypertension.

The mother noticed the first signs of the disease at the age of 4 months. The girl's disease manifested itself in severe anxiety, lethargy, regular headaches, decreased visual acuity, hearing, frequent vomiting.

Based on the diagnostic results, doctors found a congenital extended brain tumor in the baby measuring 37 mm * 22 mm * 36 mm. The baby was sent by air ambulance for surgical treatment to the National Center for Neurosurgery.

As doctors note, the difficulty of managing pediatric patients with brain tumors is associated with a rapid increase in neurological manifestations, the complexity of early diagnosis, and also requires medical specialists to use fine surgical techniques and select competent anesthetic support for surgical intervention.

“A tumor of this location and size poses a great threat to the patient’s life, as it compresses the brain stem, which contains vital centers. In this regard, the child needed urgent microsurgical treatment to remove the intraventricular tumor in our Center. High-tech equipment, modern methods of surgical treatment, anesthetic support and postoperative resuscitation were used during the operation,” said Head of the Department, neurosurgeon Gabit Olenbay.

The operation was performed by Head of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Professor of JSC “NCN” Dr. Gabit Olenbay, as well as neurosurgeon Dr. Saparbek Seitbekov. The operation was also accompanied by: anesthesiologist-resuscitator Dr. Dzhumadulla Shadiev, anesthesiologist nurse Dinara Sultankhanova, and operating nurse Balgyn Shal. The operation was carried out on a quota basis, within the framework of the compulsory medical insurance.

After the operation, the baby was transferred to the ward, her condition is stable, her hearing is being restored, and her sleep has improved. Further treatment is planned after the results of the histological examination. The baby is under the supervision of doctors.
